Does your CEO know your name?

CEO’s want to know what the impact of the event was, more than the event itself. 

IT is a key internal accelerator that drives an organisations success. Servers, Databases, Networks, applications, etc, when running properly, are all accelerators for your organisation. But when not running properly, IT can be the greatest inhibitor also.


CEO’s are demanding better reporting of quality data, faster.  Business Intelligence “BI” is on the lips of all CEO’s. True business intelligence is being able understand the link between IT and the Business, being able to represent true business data to the CEO, that he or she needs to see.

What is the Data?

You may not know what that data is yet, but it’s not hard to find. What is it that your organisation does? If you are a commercial organisation, you offer products of a particular nature that make you profitable. Profitability is driven by revenue and there are key accelerators and inhibitors within your organisation that your CEO wants to know about.

IT is a key internal accelerator that drives any organisations success. Servers, Databases, Networks, applications, etc, when running properly, are all accelerators for your organisation. But when not running properly, IT can be the greatest inhibitor also.
If you want the CEO to know who you are, you need to educate yourself of some key points that your CEO wants to know, such as;

  • Are we making sales?
  • Are we hiring employees?
  • Are we receiving money?
  • Are we able to pay our bills?
  • How is our advertising?
  • What are our manufacturing targets?

What is the Impact?

As an IT professional, you have been trained to ensure that all of the infrastructure you manage is up and running. You have SLA’s tied to your delivery. But what the CEO needs to know is, “What is the impact of an outage?”. The CEO is more concerned on the impact than the event itself. What is the impact on our manufacturing, Sales, Marketing, Accounts, HR, etc?

How to map it out

You need a map of all of the internal departments and customers of the infrastructure that your IT team supports. These can be drawn on a simple mind map at a high level.  Start at the very top and then work your way down the technology tree. Eventually you will get to the lowest level, which is an application that supports sales, residing on a range of infrastructure. It takes time, but that time is going to save your company money and get your name up in lights.
Once you have that detail, you need to know what the impact is, if each of those business units is unable to do its job? This sounds like it’s a really tough task, but it doesn’t have to be. Keep your mind on what your company does. Once again, you are a commercial organisation. You offer products. So start at the top.

Understand the Business

Get some basic averages of key metrics. Some examples are;

  • How many sales do we make each hour/day/week/month?
    • It’s good to know this anyway.
  • What are our selling hours, or do we sell via the web 24X7?
  • How many employees do we hire, how many HR staff do we have?
  • How many people in our accounts team?
  • How many people in our advertising team?
  • How many products do we manufacture each hour/day/week/month?

Once you have this basic data, you have the key data for your first BI solution. You know when a particular fault occurs in your infrastructure or applications how many users, sales, staff or manufactured products would generally have been impacted.

You have demonstrated to yourself that BI can be done and now you are ready to take this to your boss and show it off. You will receive congratulatory comments from your manager who has now assumed this idea as an initiative that should be shown to the CEO. Prepare your paper report, print it out, send it to your boss and add a “Next Steps” statement at the bottom.

Next Steps
