When thinking about Mobile Business Intelligence we often roll our eyes. The landscape is awash with charts, gauges, and scorecards that quite frankly are not very visually appealing, are hard to read, or don’t allow us access to the information that we value and want to see.
Mobile BI hasn’t been easy. In about the span of a year people began to demand access to the same level of sophistication they were used to getting off of a computer screen now on their mobile or tablet device.
Several issues arose from this.
- Most BI visual front ends were using technology not supported by mobile browsers (Silverlight, Flash, etc).
- Screen size. How does one fit the same amount of information on to a much smaller screen.
- Delivery. Do we create a separate app for every single device or have access through a mobile browser?
- How do we allow users the ability to see the information they want to see?
These issues are still causing many to scratch their heads, and for many of those who have jumped these mobile hurdles they are still finding their footing.
While, like the others, Dundas Data Visualization, Inc. is still finding its mobile BI footing, it has truly taken a unique approach with Dundas Mobile, the HTML 5 mobile browser to its Dundas Dashboard platform.
So what makes Dundas Mobile unique?
- Use of tiles. Though some may cringe at memories of the Windows 8 from a dashboard perspective the tile layout can be quite effective. Tiles allow more information to be relayed to the viewer/user than icons. You can parse out information into different sections in order to allow the user a quick overview of the state of different business sections at one glance. For a more detailed look at what’s happening you can select a specific tile and drill into the data to view charts, scorecards, etc.
- Real time. Not only can the charts and other visuals stay up to date but the tiles themselves can be set up to be reflective of current data coming in. Meaning the color, or chart being displayed on the tile will change to reflect the current data. For example, if a certain threshold is met the tile turns red to signify that attention is required or that this should be examined further.
- User/viewer empowerment. The viewer of Dundas Mobile has the ability to select the specific information that they want to see, they even have the ability to rearrange the tiles. Feel like certain tiles are more relevant than others? Simply move them to the top. Don’t feel like you need to view social media stats, remove it from your home screen. Hey, if you need it again later you can always add it back.
- Customizable. Developers take note; you have control over the colors being represented, size of tiles used, text and font, background color, etc. More information on the configuration and styling can be found here.
- Visually aesthetic. While this ultimately lies in the hands of those styling, the way Dundas has set this up allows one to create something that is very visually appealing to look at.
You have to hand it to Dundas for really thinking outside of the box and more importantly thinking like the end user and what their experience is like.
It is refreshing to see something different, functional, user friendly, and visually appealing.
