A closer look at NetCharts Performance Dashboards 2.0

by Lyndsay Wise, President, WiseAnalyticsTuesday, January 26, 2010

Visual Mining, a BI dashboards and data visualization solution provider, recently announced their NetCharts Performance Dashboards (NCPD) version 2.0. NCPD addresses mid-market companies’ needs with specific emphasis on business users by targeting the office of the CFO.  In many cases, dashboard solutions are targeted towards IT, whether due to management or development requirements.  Within many mid-market companies, IT fulfills a secondary role and does not manage the software selection process due to a lack of resources, etc. By focusing on the CFO, Visual Mining has developed a solution that gives users a similar interface to their traditional financial tracking and planning uses, but still enables them to get additional insights into their data through advanced analytics.

After being walked through a demo, it is obvious that Visual Mining has developed a solution targeted to the business user – one that is easy to develop, interact with dynamically, and customize to reflect individual user preferences.  Some features include:

  • Context sensitive analysis
  • Complex drill down and advanced filtering
  • Customizable at the end user level (for individual analyses)
  • Server licenses with user license options (not based on super-user or developer licensing)
  • Queries that always target the most up to date information

In addition to creating a solution that is easy to use without having strong computer skills, one of the goals of NCPD 2.0 is to help change the mentality of CFOs and finance in relation to their dependence on spreadsheets and/or spreadmarts.  As organizations start to implement business intelligence solutions and change their focus on managing the organization towards strategic management and developing a cohesive view of their business the role of BI and analytics becomes even more important.  Dashboards provide front-end access to information insight and in the case of NCPD 2.0 give any user within the organization the ability to gain deeper insights into information.

Although focused on the office of the CFO, NCPD 2.0 can be used across the organization and expanded towards any use of information analysis.  Overall, Visual Mining is one example of dashboard that really focuses on end user interactivity and overall ease of use.  With mid-market companies expanding their overall adoption of BI through dashboard use, these types of applications will continue to play a central role within mid-market BI.
