Actuate said that the free open source Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (Birt) platform has brought the company an estimated $55m (£35m) in revenues by driving developers to its other products.
Actuate had roughly 10,000 developers at launch, but this number has now swollen to three million, prompting the firm to change its stock ticker symbol to BIRT.
"Everyone understood that if you had three million developers versus 10,000 developers your business opportunity would be better," Actuate chief executive Pete Cittadini told V3.co.uk.
