Retailers are under tighter pressure than ever to gain sustainable competitive advantage. In today’s fluctuating economy and fast-moving retail environment, they must be able to react instantly to business needs and anticipate business problems in advance. To do this, they need access to information, and the right information at that.
ShiSh Shridar, retail industry market development manager at Microsoft, says that this means a move towards real-time operational business intelligence (BI). “Retailers have traditionally looked at sales in seasons, months and days,” he explains. “But the past decade has changed all that. The Internet and the advent of broadband connectivity introduced the notion of ‘real time’ and ‘near real time’, and this is the pace of today. With this in mind, today’s retailers need operational solutions that give them instant access to current information.”
